Oral Traditions of Western Rajasthan: From Father to Son, Mapping the Role of Oral Traditions in Shaping Communal Ideologies over Generations

Abstract

Description

The study explores verbal testimonies that bring aspects of the past to the present. The oral traditions of Rajasthan transmit historical data (facts, myths, legends, tales etc) from generation to generation, eventually leading to the shaping of a community’s thoughts, values, belief systems and ideologies. The communal ideologies have been analysed through oral practices of five communities - the Kamads, the Kaavadiya Bhats, the Langhas, the Charans and the Phad performers. This trait of still carrying forward their “legacy” of words has been explored.
